Sometimes perhaps from an early age or through some ‘road to Damascus’ incident people encounter shadowy figures who wish to transform their lives. For those who feel they already have a conscience, may be saddened that one of these figures does not pay them a visit and are somewhat envious of those, who despite appalling breaches of morality, are able to welcome this guest to come and reside with them. Of course, the former need not be disheartened for the guest had already arrived albeit years ago, the difference here being that the lodger was simply occupying their ‘spiritual attic’ being consulted only in times of emergency or despair.
One asks what is known of these strangers and indeed how would the outside world receive them? The strangers are intriguing for they tell of other worlds and provide purpose to our otherwise mundane existence; however, they wish to become a permanent member of the household. How should people respond? If they choose to follow the crowd, they will be faced with the ever-growing burdens of life which demands our constant attention and unknowing obedience; on the other hand, if they follow the stranger, destiny will present to them, an unnerving mixture of Hope and Trepidation.
In our more spiritual moments, we attentively listen and aspire to the claims of this inner most self with the potential for true realisation, not of material or intellectual ambition but of quiet calmness and the confidence of secret dreams. If we choose the world, we can merge into the frenzy of daily life with the numerous distractions and faux comradery that each of us seeks, in order to stay afloat as we smile at each other in a great pretence of happiness. Alternatively, if we cast our lot in with the stranger, we have the hope of true joy, but this is not an easy road for the sense of dread and loneliness will be a constant companion; after all these thoughts are alien and incomprehensible to the scientific mind who will cast doubt and ridicule upon us at every opportunity. However, we need to show that inner hospitality, which will defend our invited guest at all costs, indeed the sanctuary we aspire to create for our visitor will in turn provide us with our own salvation.
