So, there you are, my long-lost friend, you look lost and forlorn. Surprisingly, this is a good sign for at least you have come to realise the ongoing futility of modern society. I heard you were looking for somebody like me. I am sorry to say I had wandered off and to such an extent you thought I was no longer in reach or possibly disinterested in your welfare; nothing could be further from the truth. Even worse you felt forgotten and alone. I hadn’t realised you were trying to follow me but in truth I didn’t want you to follow ME for I have often got lost myself and am easily distracted and rarely seem to follow my own path. I am certainly not fit to be your guide, for how would I even know where you are going or where is your true destiny, which only you can know. I am talking about the special destination each of us is given, the one that provides us with our purpose in life – our own secret mission.
You look puzzled as if you had just found some fragments of a distance memory, a shard of which seems to pierce the tranquillity of your controlled lifestyle, resulting in confusion and lingering despair. You are advised by those around you to cover these cracks in life’s façade with pleasure, possessions and ambition, but all credit to you, because you know the advice to be false. Instead, you bravely cling to these feelings even though they appear to torment you. The absence of an otherworldly presence leads you to measure yourself against physical and emotional norms. You will, of cause, always fall short and as a result you despise your very own existence.
The outside world is huge and by its sheer weight will attempt to grind you down; so, you must resist the temptation to conform but this is a battle that is almost impossible to fight on your own. How can I help especially as I cannot teach you or lead you? I will, however, be your true friend and shield. I will walk alongside you, so you need never be alone, I will reassure you about your own self-worth, showering you with overdue compliments, reminding you about your innate goodness and beauty; and I shall be your shield defending you against the world including that most troublesome of foes, namely yourself, or at least that part of you that has betrayed your own hopes and aspirations.
